Reforestation in the Democratic Republic of Congo

Beyond value chain mitigation

At Duvel Moortgat, sustainability lies at the heart of everything we do, and our commitment extends beyond brewing. In partnership with Lotus Bakeries and Colruyt Group, we are proud to support a large-scale reforestation project in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This initiative focuses on planting trees in degraded regions, not only helping to restore natural ecosystems but also combating climate change by capturing carbon dioxide. By participating in this project, we aim to contribute to long-term environmental restoration and demonstrate that businesses can be active partners in global sustainability efforts.

The project holds even deeper significance by directly improving the livelihoods of the local communities in Congo. In addition to restoring forests, the initiative also provides training and employment opportunities to local farmers, empowering them with the knowledge and resources to sustainably manage their land. This holistic approach ensures that the benefits of reforestation are felt not just environmentally, but also socially and economically, helping to build a more resilient and sustainable future for the people living in these regions. For us, this reforestation project represents a vital step toward restoring balance to one of the world’s most important ecosystems.

By planting native trees in deforested areas, the initiative helps to prevent soil erosion, protect biodiversity, and create natural carbon sinks that absorb harmful CO2 from the atmosphere. The project’s emphasis on sustainable forest management ensures that these restored forests will thrive for generations to come, supporting local wildlife and promoting a healthier environment. Through collaborative efforts, this project aims to tackle both climate change and ecological degradation while bringing tangible benefits to the people and landscapes of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
